How would you know if you’re in need of financial help? Sometimes the signs are unclear unless the situation gets worse. Financial problems may sneak up on you and it can be scary. Everything might be going well when, all of a sudden, an event such as a job loss causes you to realize that you aren’t financially prepared for lack of income. Let’s take a look at a few scenarios and find out if your money management skills should be closely examined:
Some Signs of Financial Problems
These indicators of personal finance issues may not even look like warning signs, but they still indicate that you could benefit from a a rel=”nofollow” href=”http://cashmoneylife.com/2009/04/20/how-to-do-financial-checkup/”>financial check-up.
Try answering these questions. If you answer mostly yes, then these are indicators that you may not have your financial matters in order:
Do you regularly earmark money for future expenses even before that money is earned?
It’s okay to plan to buy something for yourself, right? Doing so in a responsible way may be okay if the purchase is carefully considered and truly necessary. However, repeatedly slating unearned money for future expenses without taking into account unforeseen future expenses may not be a good idea. Do you find yourself always doing this?
Do you shop regularly but deep down inside you know you don’t have enough savings?
To an outsider, you may look like you are financially fit because you always have money to go shopping, but the reality is that you may be spending every penny earned and may not have a rainy day fund in case of emergencies.
Do you know how much money you have right now in your checking and/or savings account(s)?
A financially fit person should always know how much money is in each account. A lack of this knowledge represents an undoubted overall lack of knowledge about personal finances. You should be able to keep track of how much you have and how much you’re worth.
If you answered yes to most of these questions, you may benefit from a close examination of your personal finances today. Creating a budget and employing money management techniques would be a good start.
What You Can Do
Keep track of your expenses.
Keep a list of everything you buy for a week or even a few days. You may be surprised to find items you could do without. Review your budget to see where you can cut back on expenses.
Ask for assistance.
Don’t be afraid to ask family, friends or a mentor for help in getting you back on track to financial health. Chances are they have had some valuable experience in money management and can work with you to develop a budget and a strategy for reducing debt.
Consider credit counseling.
Many creditors can offer advice and are very willing to discuss repayment strategies with customers. With a little persuasion, your credit company is often willing to work out new or temporarily reduced payment schedules.
If there’s one thing I need to learn by heart, it is how to manage my money well.(Answers=First Question: yes, 2nd: yes, 3rd: no.)I’m very much guilty of doing the first and second indicators presented above. I honestly tend to get excited whenever I see stuffs I want to have thus making me splurge my money on things i do not necessarily need. I’ve suffered the consequences and learned a lot.
Thank you for reminding me that I can still do something about this. From this day onward, I’ll try to focus, set my priorities, keep track of my expenses and I might even ask the help of a professional whom i can learn from and help me get through this. Thanks a lot!
I must admit that I am a victim of overspending and I have a hard time keeping track of my money and I have a few savings.
But good thing is that I was able to recover due to the help of my family members and some friends. What I am trying to say is that, do not hesitate of asking for help from friends and especially family members because they are the only ones who can really help you and of course you should take into consideration that you should help yourself in doing this because if you don’t, the help provided by your family and friends will be useless. Now, I am talking from experience!
Great job guys!
I think i am not a victim of any financial trouble but what I can do is to provide for other solution/s in fixing this predicament.
For one, when you earn money, make sure that more than half of that will go permanently to savings and the remaining will be for your personal expense because you need to live within your means. If you really need to buy something, think whether or not it is important. If it is, then buy it. And if it is expensive, use a credit card So that you won’t spend one time big time.
Another is that, make sure to budget your expenses in terms of what you buy everyday. Keep track of it. You should allot a specific amount of money for each of your expenses like for food, for clothes, for transportation, for communication and the other things you need to shell out money for.
All other else, I think, it’s common sense already!
