Every year, we celebrate occasions. Whether it is a birthday, graduation, shower party or anniversary, parties are a great way to gather friends and family. These occasions can, however, turn into a budgeting nightmare without the proper planning. We all know it’s easy to overspend when throwing a celebration. There’s food, decorations, and activities to think about depending on the type of event you are hosting.

The good news is, you do not have to be a professional party planner in order to put together a party on a budget. With a little creativity and ingenuity, you can have a budget-friendly party. The main idea anyway is bringing loved ones together in a nice atmosphere and keeping guests satisfied with the food. Here are a few tips to on how to throw one without overspending:

Set a budget.

When you budget for your party, do so before you start shopping. Figure out how much you can spend on your party. List the items you need and estimate what you can afford to spend on each item. Always shop from a detailed list because impulse buys are common in party planning. Keep a running total of the expenses so you know when you need to cut corners on one item because you went over on another. If you spend a lot of time online, you can check out these cheap party supply places online for good deals.

Borrow stuff and be resourceful.

Don’t be afraid to ask family and friends for an item that you may need for the party. Most of them would be happy to part with items that they have been storing, not wanting to relegate them to the trash. Borrowing stuff can save you a lot! Also, make and deliver your own invitations. Save on postage by hand-delivering invitations to people you see regularly. You can also send email invitations for more casual gatherings.

Get help from friends.

Invite a few friends over to help you select a theme for your event, or make decorations and invitations. A little creativity can go a long way, and this always seems to make something appear more heartfelt. You do not have to have every thing your heart desires for your party. You may be surprised at your friends’ ideas, and you can save a lot with their help.
Don’t be afraid to be original. It’s your party, and if you think it is appropriate for the event, then it is.

Cook your own food or ask guests to bring a dish.

If you’re a whiz in the kitchen, prepare the food yourself. Bake your own cake or serve sliced homemade snack cakes instead of ordering a personalized cake from the store. At the same time, just because you are hosting the affair doesn’t mean you have to cater it completely on your own. Asking guests to bring a dish is one sure way to add variety to your menu. This way, your guests can enjoy a buffet-style gathering and you can save on the food bill. Don’t forget to thank each guest for their contribution, though.

Reuse and maximize.

Use reusable tableware. Employing real dishes, utensils, and glassware can save big money. But in case you want to free yourself from washing them, you can always opt to buy paper cups, plates and plastic utensils for your guests to use. Most grocery stores have proprietary store-branded versions of these items that are just as good as branded ones at about half the price. Don’t forget to get a big, cheap package of paper towels or something similar, as spills happen most of the time.

I find potlucks to be most helpful when it comes to parties. It helps you save while having fun, especially since you get to share recipies and food that you like with others (or you think others will like). It also makes parties more memorable and personal because each guest gets to share in ’setting up’ the dinner table and the menu for the gathering. It’s very wise and practical, and so far is a practice that hasn’t gone out of social acceptability.

Whenever I have a party, I always get a head count of the people who are coming. Other than that, a few months before the event, I allot a specific amount like a few thousands for the expenses needed for the party from food to the decoration. With the head count, I know how much food I’m going to buy or cook and sometimes, I just add a few extra food just in case there are unexpected guests that are coming.

When it comes to group parties, I highly suggest my friends to do potluck since it’s really effective and since there are many who are coming, they can bring more food to add to the variety of food to eat. Sometimes, it’s all in the planning, saving/budgeting and the execution to make the almost perfect parties!

Nice post btw!

The tips are perfect especially for the upcoming holidays! I am throwing a Christmas party soon. Part of the original plan includes buying cooked meals and renting a place but after reading this article i realized that it will be more practical if I ask each of my friends to bring their favorite party food or contribute their expertise may it be in art music or decorations. Aside from being able to cut cost this will be more fun and exciting because everyone gets to be involved.
