Oh look, it’s February already! It has been one whole month since the New Year started. Allow us to ask you a simple little question you may or may not want to hear: Have you started fulfilling your New Year’s resolutions yet? Don’t worry, this is not a scolding, and we won’t judge you if you answered ‘no.’ As always we are here to help. If you are part of the majority of New Year’s resolution makers who have vowed to shed some pounds or save more money by the end of the year, here are a few simple tips that can help you do both. The only effort you need to take is discipline.

Downsize Your Orders

If you have watched that controversial documentary, Supersize Me, then you should know the consequences of always ordering your food a size or two bigger than the regular serving. When eating out or ordering out, opt for the basic meal set. Cut back on any add-ons if you can help it as well. You don’t always need to have a hash brown with your McDonalds breakfast meal, right? Not only will you be able to save a dollar or more for ever downsized meal you get, you’ll also be able to cut down on your calorie intake.

Choose Water When You Order

It is incredible how many extra calories can be taken from sodas, juices and other flavored drinks. Cutting them out completely can save you 360 calories or more each day. When you are at a restaurant and the waiter asks you what you want to drink, choose water. Not only is it the healthiest choice, it is completely free! You generally do not have to worry about the cleanliness of the water being served at the restaurant. The country has very stringent on water safety and potability, particularly in public establishments.

Cut Back on Processed Snacks

Veer away from the Chips and Snacks aisle at the grocery store. If you really have a case of the munchies, eat an apple. It’s a great appetite suppressant and has a lot of health benefits to boot. Not like your regular bag of potato chips, which are filled with processed starch, salt and fat. Rather than satisfying your cravings, after polishing off the remaining crumbs, you will most likely be tempted to grab another bag because it does not make you feel full despite the number of calories there are in a single potato chip. That’s just one more dollar out of your wallet.

Take Fewer Coffee Detours

Cut back on those trips to Starbucks and other coffee shops. Before leaving for work, make your own coffee. You won’t have to spend a single penny more than you should. And while coffee can be good for your health because of the antioxidants, too much of it is unadvisable as well.

These are all very simple budget-saving tips. If you follow all of them, you will probably be able to save around ten dollars at the most everyday. This may not look like much, but think about the big picture. Taking fewer coffee detours alone can raise your savings by a significant percentage. As for your weight and health, you will be surprised by what a little discipline can do.

So far, I was able to follow my new year’s resolution of not eating too much and gladly, I was able to shed 10 pounds. Other than that, I was able to save a good amount of money with limiting my food purchases. This post really explained everything you need to know about saving and how you can help yourself in other ways.

Well, when it comes to saving money during the new year it’s really good to save money from food expenses and drinks. As much as possible one good way of saving from these things is to bring packed meals when you’re at work – it may be a hassle during the mornings but it’s a good practice of saving since you’ll not buy food when you’re outside.
