When planning out your finances, some of the things you should do would most likely include creating a list of things to buy when going out to shop. For the more frugal shopper, the list should also include ‘finding the best deals for each item’ and ’sticking to the budget.’

Let’s face it. We sometimes fall prey to impulse buying, and that puts sticking to our financial plans firmly in the back seat. Whatever tickles our fancy can suddenly take us all the way to the checkout counter on autopilot without hesitation.

These days, however, the idea of shopping to save and getting cashbacks is on the rise. Finding the best deals when you shop is a great way to build up your savings, if you know where to look.

Budgeting – it isn’t quite enough

Of course, pinning down your budget only wins you half the battle, but it’s certainly imperative. Budgeting is pretty much like goal setting, where you set your eyes firmly on an object. That is why you need to put your whole heart and might into trimming down your budget and sticking to it, otherwise there might not be enough of your resources to go around.

In times like these, following a frugal budget could save you hundreds of dollars – dollars that you could spend on more important things, such as your kids’ college tuition, your 401K, the remodeling of your house, etc. But it’s just so hard at times to stick to the game plan when a shiny new pair of sneakers flashes on your TV screen!

Where the deals are

Fortunately, these days, there are better ways to save than just sticking to your budget. When you Google the term “deals,” the search will almost always return results pertaining to discounted shopping items. Even on one of today’s most popular social sites, Twitter, the keyword “deals” points you to conversations on coupons and other money-saving items on the Internet.

Coupons for shopping deals abound online and offline. Coupons on the Net can be merchant-generated codes with corresponding discounts. For example, a travel site will give away 10% off on all flights using the code TRAVEL10. Shopping sites give away free coupons on hundreds of items in all categories from travel and electronics to gifts, jewelry and apparel among others.

Other shopping sites offer an even better way to save huge amounts of money. Apart from giving away coupon codes, some sites give rebates or cashbacks, where consumers get to recoup a percentage of the money spent on selected items. Microsoft’s ‘bing’ shopping site, for example, offers cashbacks for different items.

In most cases, the pair of high-tech sneakers you saw on TV may cost a lot more than you can afford. However, you may want to find out if it’s up on sale somewhere. Here’s a tip, the next time you’re online, Google or Twitter the terms “(Insert your favorite brand name) deals.” With some crossing of fingers, you just might be able to find some great deals on the said item.

The next time you shop, don’t just list down all the items you need to purchase. Try to look around and see if the items you need are available at a discount online or in your nearest department store. If purchasing an item can wait till the next sale comes up, it might be worth the wait.

i think this is a really helpful blog since as a female, I have personal needs, so as much as possible, I make of the things I urgently need. Thus I have a rule to myself to buy what is urgent and save money to buy what is important. I use this so that I wouldn't be indulged in temptation of buying something i like when i see it in magazines. Yes this is really a helpful post. Thanks!
